1. Decked-Out Photo Booths
Why are photo booths so awesome? Not only are they fun, they add an entire new layer of photography to your wedding album — that is, the chance to have a photo of every single guest at your wedding.
2. Low, Lush Centerpieces
Here’s the deal: You want your guests at the reception to talk face to face — not face through tall centerpiece vase. Set into creative containers like small planters, classic pedestals, and even apple crates, you can pack some serious personality into these little arrangements.
Tip: If you have a large reception space and are worried the small centerpieces won’t be enough to fill the room, don’t be. Supplement those tall arrangements with interesting lighting and draping.
3. Cake Buffets
You can’t please everyone, but you certainly can try. Serve several cakes in different flavors and fillings (go for seasonal favorites like pumpkin and cream cheese in the fall or lemon blackberry in the summer). Then, order a smaller wedding cake for the cutting topped off with flowers or a creative cake topper.
Tip: Fill out the rest of the cake table with mini desserts, cookies, and candies.
4. Choreographed Dances
Remember the famous Minnesota couple who choreographed their ceremony processional? Well, that wasn’t just a one-time deal: Couples all over the country are taking the idea and making it their own. Consider an all-girls dance just before the bouquet toss (like, oh say, “All the Single Ladies”?) or a choreographed dance routine with dad or mom.
Tip: Not so much the dance-in-front-of-everyone-types? Look into hiring dancers to get the party started.
5. Turntable DJs
Everyone loves a live band, but DJs are making a huge comeback — and we’re not talking about the old iPod-and-speakers setup. We’re talking skilled turntable DJs who can create a unique mishmash of music catered to your guests, guaranteeing you a packed dance floor all night long.
Tip: If it’s in the budget, hire a live specialty band (think jazz trio, bluegrass group, or even funk band) for the cocktail hour, and then a DJ to take over the rest.
6. Themed Engagement Photo Shoots
Just like your dress and reception décor, your engagement photo shoot should be completely you. Follow that line of thinking and you’ll understand why couples are coming up with the most creative themed shoots, from Mad Men and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, to the more obsure 1940s prohibition-themed picnic shoots.
Tip: Not really the theme-y types? Tone it down and take along a couple props to your engagement photo shoot like colorful balloons, umbrellas, or a tandem bicycle.
7. Getaway Dresses
Let’s just say the getaway dress is a great opportunity to make a statement (not to mention photo opp!) at the end of the night.
Tip: Can’t imagine changing out of it? Pick a different day. Wear a cute, white getaway-esque dress on the day you go to the courthouse together to get your marriage license. Bring along your photographer, or just ask a friend to snap some shots. Rehearsal dinner is a great opportunity as well
