How long have you been a seamstress?
I’ve been a seamstress for a very long time, lets just say its been more than a few decades, more than a quarter of a century….. I started at a very young age! I really started sewing for clients at age 14 when the jumpsuits were a big hit!
Where did you go to school/train?
For formal training I went to college at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. I’m still grateful to my parents for allowing me to go there from Buffalo NY, at age 16, even though I was shielded by the college and dormitory it was a big move. From there I worked in the New York City and San Francisco garment centers. More than anything, it’s really a God given talent that I inherited from my mom who used to make my Barbie (yes they had them back then!) ball gown dresses.
What is your favorite part about helping brides and altering their gowns?
I love seeing the transformation of the wedding gown to a beautiful dress made for the bride from the final touches I put on the dress. Most of all I look forward to seeing that smile from the bride that lets me know that they are completely happy with the transformation. And I like the challenge of solving occasional fitting obstacles!
Is there any advice you’d offer to current and future brides?
When it comes to your wedding budget – you can skimp on anything but your gown. When all is said and done the photos of you in your gown will mark your event forever more than anything. Not the menu, not your venue, invitations, limo, etc… So make sure its what you love. Your gown must be custom fitted on you by a professional that is not only experienced in excellent fit but is creative and sensitive to your personal preferences as well. And I would be that person!!
Anything else you’d add?
I love doing bustles that are unique and functional. About my workroom, I go over the floor daily before I work with a white towel to ensure your gown stays in perfect condition.
